Dear OCS families,

In keeping with our timeline towards reopening, the Oldham County Board of Education will meet on Tuesday, July 14th at 4:30 p.m. at the Arvin Education Center. The focus of this board meeting will be the presentation of the draft plan to reopen schools. The meeting will be live-streamed and the link to view the meeting will be posted on the district’s home page several hours before the beginning of the meeting.

I will be asking the Board to approve two items at this meeting. The first will be the creation of a Virtual Learning Academy as an option for families who feel unable or uncomfortable returning to in-person instruction this fall. The second will be to approve a temporary policy mandating wearing face coverings for all staff and students (1st through 12th grade) when social distancing cannot be maintained, unless there is a medical condition or disability that would prevent them from wearing a face covering.

At the end of the 2019-20 school year, the district created a Reopening Task Force. This task force is composed of 10 subcommittees with over 100 members all working toward the common goal of developing a comprehensive reopening plan for the 2020-21 school year. This will be a year like no other, as we open schools during a worldwide pandemic. Over the past 5 weeks, countless hours have been spent reviewing and developing plans for every area of school operations. We have sought guidance from the health department throughout the process and our recommendations will be presented to the board at Tuesday’s meeting. After the board suggests their changes to recommendations, we will seek further input from the health department in order to have a final plan approved at the July 27th board meeting.

Again, the board will not take action on anything other than the virtual academy and temporary mask policy at the July 14th meeting.

We will have a portion of the meeting set aside for in-person public expression. Public expression will be conducted in accordance with the state “Healthy at Work” guidance. Depending on the number of persons who wish to address the board, I anticipate that each speaker will be allocated between 1-3 minutes to share their thoughts. Recognizing that reopening schools is at the forefront of everyones’ minds, and that many of our families are not comfortable gathering in public at this time, we have created an email address dedicated to receiving comments and questions in advance of the meeting. To allow the Board sufficient time to review messages prior to the board meeting, we have set a deadline of 6:00 p.m. Monday, July 13th.

Please use the following email address if you would like to send in your public expression: PublicExpression@oldham.kyschools.us You will need to include your name, home address and phone number with your comments.

The ”Healthy at Work” rules for in-person public expression will be posted by close of the business day on Monday.

Thank you and have a great weekend.

Respectfully,

Greg Schultz
